The Research Center is mainly working on the delopment of a database called the Evidence Based Nursing (EBN) Matrix. Another purpose is to develop a virtual research center in which other nursing organizations or nurses may conduct online research. The center also provides an infrastructure for those who want to create a new NLINKS Center. Access the corresponding menu item on the left for more information.

Clinical Guidelines Database

EBN Matrix
The EBN Matrix provides a structure for generating databases. At present, it is conditioned upon the a sleep disturbance search string. The reason for this is to give viewers an idea of its capabilities for retrieving citations for a particular search.

Your help is needed. NANDA-International is a stakeholder in Nursing's Agenda for the Future. Two of the work plans that NANDA submitted involve the development of patient outcomes, workforce outcomes, and best practices databases, using NLINKS EBN Matrix. Your suggestions are sought as we seek descriptor terms and/or synonyms to be used in development of these filters.

Now, don't worry about whether the terms or appropriate or not. The Saint Louis University team can study that question. Remember, that medical subject headings consist of many categories and subcategories. Using PubMed's MeSH Browser and inserting the search term outcomes, the following result was obtained. We may use some or many of these. But, we want to concentrate on nursing sensitive outcomes and such may have been overlooked in a listing of outcome categories. In selecting the outcomes to be used, think in terms of synonyms and descriptors:
    • Patient outcomes example: Let's look at terms that may be used as filter terms for patient outcomes. They may include process outcomes, structure outcomes, system outcomes, outcomes assessment, health outcomes, patient outcomes, decision theory, decision analysis, effectiveness, quality monitoring, data monitoring, clinical trials data monitoring, audits, risk-taking, risk reduction, consequences, absolute risk, relative risk, benchmarks, endpoints, events, terminal events, reactions, effects, injury, morbidity, mortality, rates, errors, complications, success, treatment outcome, treatment failure.
    • Workforce outcomes example: Let's look at terms that may be used as filter terms for workforce outcomes...
    • Best practices: Let's look at terms for may be used as filter terms for best practices...
    Submit your suggestions here.

In the next issue of Nursing Diagnosis: International Journal of Nursing Language and Classification, look for a "viewpoint" article on essential differences between evidence based nursing and evidence based medicine. The journal is a benefit of membership in NANDA.
