Introduction and Purposes

Evidence based databases are needed in nursing. It is important to determine and analyze the evidence base that underlies nursing literature and to enter the results in a relational database. This is not as easy as it sounds. The available filters used to access the evidence base of medical practice automatically exclude qualitative studies in nursing and even some program evaluation research studies. Therefore, filters that are sensitive to evidence based nursing issues have been developed. A database that documents the kind of contribution an article makes to nursing practice and terminology development is also important. Therefore, the first main purpose of the Research Center is to develop a database matrix that allows articles to be categorized and accessed on the basis of their
  • evidence base from the standpoint of whether the report deals with primary, secondary, and tertiary data
  • contribution to nursing practice or terminology development from the standpoint of diagnosis, related factors, diagnostic tests, interventions, and outcomes
This database is called the Evidence Based Nursing Matrix. The first focus will be on the nursing diagnoses of disturbed sleep pattern and sleep deprivation. For additional background information, see Current Study.

The second purpose is to develop a virtual research center in which other nursing organizations or nurses may conduct online research. Those interested in developing the first online research study, see Conducting Online Research.

A third purpose is provide an infrastructure for those who want to create an NLINKS Center, e.g., a Taxonomy Center, a Pain Center, an International Center, etc. Those interested, see HOW-TO Create a NLINKS Center.
